Top Tips For a Green Lawn This Spring

These easy lawn care steps will vastly improve your lawn for the spring and summer ahead

Feeding and weeding

As we enter spring your lawn will begin to grow rapidly and mowing frequency increases, this will require the lawn to be fed to reduce the risk of it be become thin and sparse.

Apply a spring feed as the grass begins to show near growth and then set up a frequent feeding programme that is carried out throughout the summer months too.

Use a spring lawn feed that contains a high nitrogen content as this will lead to effective and amazing results.

If you plan to use lawn weedkillers, its best to wait until the lawn is longer then usual before applying the selective weed killer carefully. Always follow the instructions for the product you’re using to ensure no damage to the lawn. This is best done in the summer when the weeds are actively growing. Only mow when the weeds are dying out.

Caring and defining edges

To keep a sharp, tidy and well-maintained appearance to the lawn it’s vital to carry out edging or vertical trimming. This also stops the lawn from spreading into plant beds and borders – also a reason why clippings should be collected.

After your first spring mow, you can either use painted lines or a string and wooden board to define your lines around the lawn, (for circular beds, this is better done by eye).

Using a half-moon edging tool/iron to recut the edge. After the edge has been established, grass shears or a strimmer can be used to cut back the growth to maintain the slope created.

Mending patches

Bare patches on a lawn are not only an eyesore but also allows weeds to grow happily and spread quickly. Patches can be mended with new turf or overseeding the area.

Re turfing gives an almost instant cover however the correct turf must be used to match your existing lawn (speak with your supplier or take a sample of your lawn with you). Water your new turf regularly to ensure roots grow into the existing soil.

Overseeding is a cheaper alternative to turf and should be done at 25g per sq metre. Disturb the soil using a soil rake or garden fork and cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, pressing down on both using a board or light stepping.

Regular mowing & watering

During the spring/summer months it is best to mow your lawn around every 7- 10 days cutting off no more than a third off the height of the grass. Ensure you use a sharp mower blade for a clean cut. Mowing in varied directions throughout the seasons is recommended if possible. Collect clippings during or after mowing for best results.

A good watering a couple of times a week during the drier months is recommended rather than more frequent but less water. This would ensure your grass maintains its lovely green look and stays healthy throughout the spring/summer months. Watering also helps dissolve any feed and fertilizers you use on the lawn.

Install an irrigation system if watering may be inconvenient for you during travelling/work etc.

“ A highlight of the event was the recruiting talk by coach Nelson North. I learned specifics about college recruiting from the perspective of someone who has done it successfully at different amateur levels. The three A’s he emphasized – Ability, Academics, and Attitude ”
